Overview

Tommy Mello is the founder and chief executive officer of A1 Garage Door Service, a residential garage door repair and installation company headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.[11] He started the business in 2007 with $50,000 in debt and no industry mentors, and grew it into what multiple trade publications describe as the largest independently owned garage door company in North America, operating across more than 70 markets in approximately 20 states with over 1,000 employees.[5][16] In September 2026, Reuters reported that KKR & Co. agreed to acquire A1 Garage Door Service for approximately $2 billion, one of the largest transactions in the home services sector.[6][10]

A1 has appeared on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies eight times.[12] The company earned Great Place To Work Certification in 2026, with 87 percent of employees rating it a great place to work.[1] Mello is also the author of two books — Home Service Millionaire (2018) and Elevate: Build a Business Where Everybody Wins — and the host of The Home Service Expert, a podcast focused on the home services industry.[13][3] He is a regular columnist for Inc. Magazine.[7]

Beyond A1, Mello founded Tommy Mello Ventures, a growth-focused investment and advisory organization supporting home services and home improvement companies across the United States, and Home Service Freedom, a national membership organization for home service contractors.[17] In 2026, the Phoenix Business Journal named him one of its 25 Most Admired Leaders, selected from more than 160 nominations.[1][12]

Early life and education

Mello grew up in Sterling Heights, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.[11] His parents divorced when he was approximately seven years old, and his mother worked multiple jobs to support the family.[14] He began working at a young age — mowing lawns, shoveling snow, and, by age 12, washing dishes at a local restaurant for $4 an hour.[14] He moved to Phoenix, Arizona at age 16 in 1999 and took a job painting garage doors.[11]

In Phoenix, Mello worked a series of jobs including bartending and flipping cars, and started a landscaping company before entering the garage door industry full-time.[14] He initially enrolled at the University of Arizona to study dentistry before switching to business, and earned a master's degree in business from the university.[11][14] He completed the degree around the same time he launched A1 Garage Door Service in 2007.[11]

Career

A1 Garage Door Service (2007–present)

In 2007, Mello became the sole owner-operator of a single Phoenix-based garage door service business — originally called A1 Garage Door Specialists — that came with $50,000 in debt.[11][5] He handled sales, marketing, accounting, and hiring himself, often working more than 80 hours a week.[11] By 2017, the company had reached $25 million in annual revenue.[11] By 2021, annual revenue had grown to $74 million.[8]

A1 grew through a combination of organic expansion and acquisitions of independent garage door operators. The company acquired Don's Garage Doors in Denver, Garage Door Doctor in Houston, A1 Garage Door Specialists in Colorado Springs in February 2023, and Duppy's Door Service in Columbus, Ohio — its first acquisition in the state — in May 2023.[20][5] In July 2024, A1 acquired Ideal Garage Doors, a 25-year-old Phoenix-area company with five locations, and American Veteran Garage Door Repair, a Las Vegas operator with three locations.[5] By 2024, the company operated 44 locations across 19 states, served approximately 20,000 new clients per month, and employed more than 600 people.[5]

In December 2022, Cortec Group completed a growth recapitalization of A1 Garage Door Service Holdings.[8] Mello retained a significant ownership stake and continued to lead the company as CEO.[8] As part of the transaction, A1 distributed $100 million to employees through a phantom equity program.[19]

In November 2023, A1 became the Official Garage Door Service Partner of the Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL franchise, in a deal that included presenting sponsorship of the Hockey Garage Makeover Giveaway, digital channel features, and gameday activations at T-Mobile Arena.[4]

By 2026, A1 operated across more than 70 markets in approximately 20 states under four brands — A1 Garage Door Service, Authentic, Garage Door Doctor, and Don's Garage Doors — with over 1,000 employees.[16][12] The company earned Great Place To Work Certification in its first year participating in the program, with 87 percent of employees rating it a great place to work, compared to a 57 percent average across U.S. companies.[1][12] A1 has appeared on the Inc. 5000 list eight times, most recently ranking No. 2,335 in 2026, and was named to the 2026 Inc. Regionals: Southwest list.[12]

In September 2026, Reuters reported that KKR & Co. agreed to acquire A1 Garage Door Service for approximately $2 billion.[6][10] Yahoo Finance described the deal as part of KKR's expansion into the home services sector.[9] Hoodline reported that A1 had generated $74 million in revenue in 2021 and had grown substantially in the years since.[8]

Tommy Mello Ventures and Home Service Freedom (2021–present)

Mello founded Tommy Mello Ventures (TMV), a growth-focused investment and advisory organization supporting home services and home improvement companies across the United States.[17] According to the TITAN Business Awards, TMV's portfolio companies collectively generate more than $250 million in annual revenue and employ more than 1,000 people.[17][18] Mello is also the owner, partner, or investor in approximately 14 other businesses spanning industries including Christmas lights installation, real estate, and mobile applications.[11]

He also founded Home Service Freedom, a national membership organization for home service companies that provides training, buying-group advantages, vendor partnerships, and leadership development.[17] In November 2021, Mello launched the Vertical Track Conference in Phoenix, an annual gathering for home service and garage door professionals that drew nearly 200 attendees in its inaugural year and has since grown into one of the industry's larger annual events.[19]

Writing and media (2018–present)

Mello published Home Service Millionaire in 2018, a book chronicling his path from $50,000 in debt to a $30 million business in seven years.[13] The book became an Amazon bestseller.[11] His second book, Elevate: Build a Business Where Everybody Wins, outlines his framework for building companies where employees, customers, and owners share in success.[3] At the ACCA 2025 conference, every attendee received a complimentary copy.[3]

He hosts The Home Service Expert, a podcast focused on the home services industry that has produced approximately 480 episodes.[13] The show has featured interviews with executives from companies including HomeAdvisor and other home services firms.[13] Mello is a regular columnist for Inc. Magazine, where he writes on entrepreneurship and scaling service businesses.[7]

Keynote speaking

In 2025, Mello was selected as the keynote speaker for the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) annual conference, the premier conference for HVACR professionals.[2] ACCA president and CEO Barton James said Mello's "insights on leadership and culture are exactly what HVACR contractors need to thrive in today's competitive market."[2] At the conference, Mello also moderated the Contractor Forum Live session and hosted a book signing.[3]

As part of A1's 2022 recapitalization with Cortec Group, the company distributed $100 million to employees through a phantom equity program — a transaction structure Mello has cited as central to his philosophy of shared success.[19][3]

Mello launched the Garage Door Freedom group, an industry-wide initiative to promote best practices across the garage door sector, sharing A1's operational playbook with competitors.[19] His Titan 100 profile noted that he was "most proud of this accomplishment because he used his skills and leadership to not just help his own business but to support others in his industry."[19]
