Thomas Benjamin Blomfield is a British entrepreneur and venture investor who co-founded Monzo, the UK's largest digital bank valued at $5.2 billion with over 9 million customers.[4] He served as CEO from the company's founding in 2015 until stepping down in 2021, citing mental health challenges during the pandemic.[1] Blomfield is currently a Group Partner at Y Combinator, where he has worked with portfolio companies worth a combined $5 billion.[7]
Before Monzo, Blomfield co-founded GoCardless, a payments processor that reached a $2.1 billion valuation, and sold his first company, Boso.com, while still an undergraduate at Oxford.[5] He was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2019 for increasing competition in the banking sector.[6]
Early life and education
Blomfield was born in Hong Kong in 1985 and moved to the UK as a child.[9] He attended Dr Challoner's Grammar School in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, before reading law at the University of Oxford.[9] During his undergraduate years, he spent a year on exchange at Université Panthéon-Assas in Paris studying French and European Law.[9]
While at Oxford, Blomfield co-founded Boso.com in 2004, an eBay-style marketplace for students that expanded to 50 UK universities before being acquired by a Canadian company in 2006.[5] He completed his Bachelor's degree in Jurisprudence in 2007 and earned a Master's in Law in 2008.[9]

Starling Bank and Grouper (2014–2015)
After leaving GoCardless in 2014, Blomfield briefly served as VP Growth at Grouper, a New York-based dating app that later shut down.[5] He then joined Starling Bank as CTO but left after disagreements about the company's direction.[5]
Monzo (2015–2021)
Blomfield co-founded Monzo in 2015 with the vision of building a mobile-first challenger bank.[3] The company launched with a distinctive coral-colored debit card and transparent fee structure that differentiated it from traditional banks.[4] Under Blomfield's leadership as CEO, Monzo grew to over 9 million retail customers and 400,000 business customers.[4]
The company raised over $1.8 billion across 21 funding rounds, reaching a $5.2 billion valuation in May 2024.[4][8] Monzo became the UK's largest digital bank and expanded into business banking, lending, and investment products.[4]
In January 2021, Blomfield announced his departure as CEO, citing mental health struggles during the pandemic.[1] He remained with the company as President until fully transitioning out later that year.[1]
