Overview
Kinza Azmat is a Pakistani-American entrepreneur, acquisition operator, and the co-founder and CEO of Chief Rebel, a valuation and exit-planning software platform for small and medium-sized businesses based in Austin, Texas.[2] She is known in the acquisition entrepreneurship community for acquiring, turning around, and exiting a $9 million Texas real estate brokerage, and for her subsequent work advising SMB owners on growth and exit strategy.[2]
Azmat's career spans mechanical engineering, management consulting, and corporate supply chain operations before she pivoted to acquisition entrepreneurship in 2021. After roles at Southwest Airlines, AlixPartners, and Apple, she acquired WTA Realty — a 35-year-old apartment locating brokerage with over 150 agents — via an SBA loan, rebranded it as Perch, and led an operational turnaround before exiting in 2024.[2][3] She co-founded Chief Rebel in 2022 and the company received seed funding from Antler Austin in late 2025.[8]
Early life and education
Kinza Azmat was born in Pakistan and immigrated to the United States at age six, arriving in New York with limited English.[5] Her family later settled in Ohio. Her father ran laundromats in the U.S., an experience she has cited as an early, formative exposure to small business ownership.[6] She grew up in what she has described as an education-focused Asian-American immigrant household, where the expected career paths were medicine, law, or engineering.[5]
Azmat earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University.[5] She later earned an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin, where she met her husband, whose business school network would later introduce her to the concept of acquisition entrepreneurship.[5] She has described her immigrant upbringing as instilling a habit of intense over-preparation — a trait she later recognized as a professional asset in deal-making and operations.[5]
Career
Southwest Airlines
After completing her undergraduate degree at Ohio State, Azmat joined Southwest Airlines as a mechanical engineer. She worked on structural aircraft repairs, including damage assessment for bird strikes, before transitioning into an operations-focused role.[5] The experience gave her exposure to large-scale operations but also clarified that she wanted a more dynamic career. She has recalled realizing that her personality required more variety: "I need to be on my feet more, I need to just be doing a lot more different things during the day."[5]
AlixPartners
Following her MBA at UT Austin, Azmat joined AlixPartners, the global management consulting firm, as a consultant.[15] The role marked her transition from engineering into business strategy and operations consulting. She has noted that receiving her first consulting offer letter was the moment her parents felt she "had it figured out," easing their skepticism about her decision to attend business school rather than pursue a traditional engineering career.[5]
Apple (2020–2021)
Azmat joined Apple in early 2020 as a Senior Global Supply Manager.[2] The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted her planned relocation to Apple's California campus, and she instead began the role working remotely from Dallas.[5] During this period, her husband's business school friends introduced her to Walker Deibel's book Buy Then Build, which catalyzed her interest in acquisition entrepreneurship.[5] She left Apple in 2021 to pursue buying a business full-time.[2]
Generational Equity, LLC (2021)
Before launching her acquisition search, Azmat briefly worked as an M&A advisor and business broker at Generational Equity, a middle-market M&A advisory firm.[2] She took the role deliberately to learn the deal-making process from the sell side — understanding how brokers evaluate businesses, structure deals, and manage seller relationships — before becoming a buyer herself. The role lasted approximately six to seven months and overlapped with her departure from Apple.[5]
Perch, formerly WTA Realty / Wilson, Tindall & Associates (2021–2024)
In November 2021, Azmat acquired WTA Realty (Wilson, Tindall & Associates), a 35-year-old apartment locating brokerage operating across central Texas with 150 to 200 licensed real estate agents and eight offices in Austin, San Antonio, and San Marcos.[2][8] The business had approximately $9 million in revenue and $1.2 million in EBITDA at the time of acquisition.[10] Azmat financed the deal with an SBA loan, putting down $345,000 to retain 100 percent ownership.[5] She was five months pregnant at the time of the acquisition.[2]
The transition proved more difficult than anticipated. Azmat has acknowledged that she overpaid using outdated financials and underestimated the operational dysfunction within the business.[10] She undertook a comprehensive turnaround, consolidating six subsidiary brands — including A+ Apartment Locators, Apartment Experts, and Apartments Now! — under a single unified brand, Perch, which she announced in February 2023.[3][16] She filed the PERCH trademark in January 2023.[16] According to the company, the business had signed more than 250,000 leases since its founding in 1987.[8] Azmat stepped down as CEO in mid-2024, transitioning to an executive board role after completing the turnaround.[15]
Contrarian Thinking / Codie Sanchez
Azmat served as the second-in-command to Codie Sanchez at Contrarian Thinking, the financial media and business acquisition company.[15] In this role, she operated as a senior operator within one of the most prominent platforms in the acquisition entrepreneurship community. The exact dates of her tenure have not been publicly disclosed, though the role appears to have overlapped with or followed her Perch CEO tenure.[15]
BizScout (2024–present)
In 2024, Azmat took on the role of Head of Supply at BizScout, a business acquisition marketplace associated with the Contrarian Thinking ecosystem.[13] The role involved sourcing business listings and managing supply-side operations for the platform. BizScout raised $5 million in April 2026.[13]
Chief Rebel (2022–present)
Azmat co-founded Chief Rebel in August 2022, while still serving as CEO of Perch.[2] The company is a valuation, growth, and exit-planning software platform designed for small business owners with $1 million to $15 million in revenue.[2] The platform draws directly on Azmat's experience acquiring, operating, and exiting Perch — translating the lessons of that turnaround into tools for other SMB owners preparing for exits. Chief Rebel received seed funding from Antler Austin in late 2025.[8] According to the company's website, Chief Rebel has advised on more than $26 million in deals and worked with over 750 entrepreneurs.[2]
Azmat also authored Bad Apple: Lessons from a Business Acquisition Gone Wrong, published through Chief Rebel, which chronicles the near-failure and turnaround of her WTA Realty acquisition.[10] A second book, Leverage, covers the strategic and personal dimensions of acquiring the $8.5 million business.[6]
Optima Mergers & Acquisitions (2024–present)
In February 2024, concurrent with her transition from the Perch CEO role, Azmat joined Optima Mergers & Acquisitions as a partner.[15] The firm advises on business sales and acquisitions in the $1 million to $15 million revenue segment. The role runs concurrently with her Chief Rebel work and reflects her positioning as both a technology builder and a hands-on M&A practitioner.[14]
Acquisition Lab (2022–present)
Since approximately 2022, Azmat has served as an Acquisition Entrepreneur Advisor at Acquisition Lab, the training program and community founded by Walker Deibel, author of Buy Then Build.[13] The advisory role is notable for its circularity: it was Deibel's book that originally inspired Azmat's own pivot to acquisition entrepreneurship, and she now mentors aspiring buyers through the same program.[5][13]
SMU Cox School of Business — MBA Business Leadership Center (2025–present)
Beginning in 2025, Azmat has served as a guest lecturer at the SMU Cox School of Business MBA Business Leadership Center in Dallas, where she teaches on topics related to business acquisition, exits, and entrepreneurship.[14]
Public statements
"The immigrant mentality was 'Fit in. Do what you need to do to fit in.' … studying the environment around you… constantly comparing where you are compared to other people around you… It didn't really click in that I had gone overboard with that, or in a sense, that I was exactly where I was supposed to be, which is, overly prepared for most things in life."

"When I was growing up as a first-generation immigrant watching my dad run laundromats, I never imagined I'd become an entrepreneur who helps business owners navigate the complex journey of building, growing, and ultimately selling their companies."

Personal life
Azmat is based in Austin, Texas.[14] She is married; her husband's business school network introduced her to the acquisition entrepreneurship community.[5] She has spoken publicly about her experience as a Pakistani-American woman operating in male-dominated industries, including engineering, consulting, and M&A.[15] Outside her professional work, she runs an Etsy shop called CedarAndSageUS, which sells rustic, farmhouse-style home decor.[14]
