De Sena was born on January 2, 1969, in Howard Beach, Queens, to parents Jean and Ralph De Sena.[4] His mother was a yoga enthusiast and his father owned a business.[4] After his parents divorced, he moved to Ithaca, New York with his mother and sister.[3]

Wall Street Trading (1990–2001)

After graduating from Cornell, De Sena moved to Wall Street where he worked as an equities and derivatives trader for over a decade.[3] He founded his own trading firm and specialized in high-stakes financial markets.[2]

Peak Races and Death Race (2007–present)

In 2007, De Sena founded Peak Races and created the Death Race, an extreme endurance event designed to push participants to their physical and mental limits.[2] The Death Race became known as one of the most challenging endurance events in the world, serving as a precursor to his later obstacle racing ventures.[7]

Spartan Race (2010–present)

De Sena founded Spartan Race in 2010 with the mission to create accessible obstacle racing events that would challenge participants while building a global community.[2] The company offers multiple race formats, from 3-mile Sprints to 50K+ Ultra events, combining trail running with military-inspired obstacles.[7]
