Overview
Codie A. Sanchez is an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist who founded Contrarian Thinking Capital in 2019, a fund focused on acquiring cash-flowing "boring businesses" like laundromats, car washes, and storage facilities.[7] She has built a media empire with over 1 million followers across platforms, teaching business acquisition strategies and challenging the traditional startup mentality.[6] Her newsletter reaches over 300,000 subscribers weekly with unconventional investment strategies.[13]
Sanchez transitioned from a decade-long Wall Street career at Goldman Sachs, Vanguard, and State Street to become an advocate for Main Street business ownership.[3] Her book "Main Street Millionaire" became a New York Times bestseller in 2024, selling over 150,000 copies in its first four months.[3] She serves on the board of Entourage Effect Capital and is a member of the Rolling Stone Culture Council.[1]
Based in Austin, Texas, Sanchez operates Main Street Holding Company, her personal investment vehicle that owns a diverse portfolio of cash-flowing businesses across multiple industries.[14] She co-founded Unconventional Acquisitions, an educational platform that has taught over 9,000 people how to buy small businesses with little to no money down.[6]
Early life and education
Sanchez was born in Arizona to a Mexican-American father who worked as a self-made blue-collar builder and an Irish-American mother who was a special education teacher.[4] She grew up in a bilingual household and was the first in her family to work on Wall Street.[3]
She earned a bachelor's degree in international business and a master's degree in Latin American studies from Georgetown University.[14] As a journalism student, she documented human trafficking and violence against women in Juarez, Mexico, work that earned her a Robert F. Kennedy Award for journalism.[5] Despite this recognition, she realized that awareness alone wasn't sufficient to create meaningful change—people needed financial resources and power.[5]
Career
Wall Street (2008–2019)
Sanchez began her finance career as an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs in 2008, working on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets transactions.[3] She gained experience in financial modeling, due diligence, and deal execution across various industries during her four-year tenure.[8]
In 2012, she moved to Vanguard as an investment analyst, focusing on analyzing investment opportunities and portfolio management strategies at one of the world's largest asset management companies.[8] This role deepened her understanding of institutional investing and asset allocation, which later influenced her contrarian investment philosophy.[3]
From 2016 to 2019, Sanchez served as a senior investment analyst at State Street Corporation, focusing on alternative investments and private markets.[8] This experience with non-traditional investment opportunities informed her later approach to investing in small businesses and cash-flowing assets.[7]
Contrarian Thinking Capital (2019–present)
In 2019, Sanchez founded Contrarian Thinking Capital, a venture capital fund that invests in infrastructure technology for small businesses and focuses on the next generation of tools that help Main Street companies operate more efficiently.[7] The fund targets businesses that generate consistent cash flow, including laundromats, car washes, self-storage facilities, and other traditionally overlooked sectors.[9]
Under her leadership, the fund has made dozens of investments while building a community of entrepreneurs focused on cash-flowing businesses rather than high-growth tech startups.[7] The firm also invests in early-stage companies that serve small business owners, aligning with Sanchez's philosophy of supporting Main Street entrepreneurship.[9]
Simultaneously, Sanchez built a media empire around teaching others how to buy and operate small businesses, growing her following to over 1 million across platforms.[6] Her weekly newsletter, Contrarian Thinking, reaches over 300,000 subscribers with content focused on unconventional investment strategies and business acquisition opportunities.[13]
Main Street Holding Company and Education (2019–present)
Sanchez operates Main Street Holding Company, her personal investment vehicle that owns a diverse portfolio of "boring businesses" including car washes, laundromats, roofing companies, painting businesses, and handyman services.[14] The holding company represents her approach to building wealth through acquiring cash-flowing small businesses rather than starting from scratch.[6]
She co-founded Unconventional Acquisitions with Ryan Snow, an educational platform that teaches people how to buy small businesses with little to no money down.[6] The mastermind program includes over 20 hours of video content, live calls, and a community of 800+ members globally who have successfully acquired businesses ranging from strip malls to HVAC companies.[11]
In December 2024, Sanchez published "Main Street Millionaire," which became an instant New York Times bestseller, selling over 150,000 copies in its first four months.[3] The book teaches readers how to build wealth by acquiring ordinary businesses rather than chasing risky startups.[3]
Recognition and public engagement
Sanchez achieved New York Times bestseller status with "Main Street Millionaire" in 2024, establishing her as a leading voice in alternative investment strategies.[3] She previously received the Robert F. Kennedy Award for her journalism work documenting human trafficking and violence in Mexico.[5]
She serves as a member of the Rolling Stone Culture Council, an invitation-only community for cultural leaders and influencers in business and media.[1] Sanchez also sits on the board of Entourage Effect Capital, a cannabis-focused investment fund, bringing her expertise in alternative investments and emerging markets.[1]
Her media presence includes hosting the "BigDeal" podcast on YouTube, where she explores real stories and lessons from entrepreneurs, builders, and creators.[12] She has appeared on major platforms including Masters of Scale, where she discussed her contrarian investment philosophy and transition from Wall Street to Main Street.[2]
