Overview
Byron Deeter is a Partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, where he has led investments in 26 unicorns and 13 IPOs since joining the firm in 2005.[7] He was elected Board Chair of the National Venture Capital Association in 2024, becoming the industry trade association's leader during a period of market volatility.[1]
Before joining Bessemer, Deeter co-founded Trigo Technologies in 1999, one of the first global SaaS companies, which grew to 150 employees and $40 million in revenue before being acquired by IBM in 2004.[13] His experience as both entrepreneur and investor has made him a prominent voice in cloud computing and enterprise software investing.[8]
Deeter has appeared three times on the Forbes Midas List, recognizing the world's top venture capitalists, in 2012, 2013, and 2014.[7] He is known for leading more cloud IPOs than any other venture capitalist, including investments in companies like Twilio, ServiceTitan, and Shopify.[8]
Early life and education
Deeter graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Economy.[13] During his time at Berkeley, he was a four-time Rugby Collegiate National Champion and met his future wife, Alli, on his first day on campus.[13]
After graduation, he began his career as a Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company, working with Fortune 500 clients in media and technology industries from 1996 to 1998.[13] He then joined TA Associates as an Associate, focusing on software sector private equity investments from 1998 to 2000.[13]
Career
Trigo Technologies (1999–2004)
In 1999, Deeter left TA Associates to co-found Trigo Technologies, one of the first global Software-as-a-Service companies.[13] As President and CEO, he grew the company to 150 employees and over $40 million in annual revenue.[13] The company was preparing for an IPO when IBM acquired it in 2004.[13]
Following the acquisition, Deeter served as a Business Development and Market Development Executive at IBM from 2004 to 2005.[13]
Bessemer Venture Partners (2005–present)
Deeter joined Bessemer Venture Partners as a Partner in 2005, focusing on cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and frontier technology investments.[7] His portfolio includes notable companies such as Twilio, ServiceTitan, Shopify, and Zylo.[8][9]
In 2017, he led Tile's $25 million funding round, helping the lost item finder expand its product line and retail partnerships.[5] In 2019, he led Zylo's $9.3 million Series A and joined the company's board, recognizing the growing need for cloud investment management among enterprises.[8]
More recently, Deeter led Luxury Presence's $25.9 million Series B in 2021, backing the real estate marketing software provider's expansion.[4] He noted the company's strong customer retention and growth metrics as key factors in the investment decision.[4]
Recognition and public engagement
Deeter was named to the Forbes Midas List in 2012, 2013, and 2014, recognizing him among the world's top venture capitalists.[7] He was also recognized by AlwaysOn as one of the Power Players of Venture Capital in 2013 and 2014.[7]
In 2024, the National Venture Capital Association elected Deeter as Board Chair, making him the leader of the industry's primary trade association during a challenging period for venture capital markets.[1] The Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal named him to their 40 Under 40 list in 2014.[7]
Deeter is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and has appeared on CNBC to discuss venture capital trends and market conditions.[6] He has been featured on prominent venture capital podcasts including The Twenty Minute VC and 20VC.[2][3]

Personal
Deeter is married to Alli Deeter, whom he met on his first day at UC Berkeley.[13] They have three children and live in Atherton, California.[13] He is a serial Ironman finisher and maintains an active athletic lifestyle.[13]
Deeter is a partner and owner of the San Francisco 49ers NFL team and Leeds United Football Club.[12] He has also been involved with the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee, supporting American athletes through his venture capital network.[11]
